Venus Williams struggled with her serve. She kept tugging at her dress. Every bit as big a nuisance was her opponent, Shahar Peer. On a Sunday afternoon in which No. 2 Kim Clijsters cruised to her victory at the U.S. Open, third-seeded Williams never looked quite comfortable in hers. She defeated 16th-seeded Shahar Peer 7-6 (3), 6-3 on the second straight windy day in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Venus Williams came through a test that was tougher than expected against Israel's Shahar Peer to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the 10th time. The No. 3-seeded Williams beat the 16th-seeded Peer 7-6 (3), 6-3 Sunday, and will face French Open champion Francesca Schiavone for a semifinal berth.

American Sam Querrey has equaled his best showing at a Grand Slam tournament by beating 14th-seeded Nicolas Almagro to reach the fourth round at the U.S. Open. The 20th-seeded Querrey won 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 Sunday. He has made the fourth round at two straight majors. Querrey lost there at Wimbledon to Andy Murray, a possible next opponent.
Schiavone gets another straight-sets win (AP)

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone won in straight sets for the fourth consecutive match, beating 20th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Sunday to advance to the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded Italian won 6-3, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2003.
Annacone steps down as LTA head coach (AP)

Britain's Lawn Tennis Association says Paul Annacone has stepped down as its head coach of men's tennis. Annacone's contract with the LTA was due to expire in November and he recently joined the coaching team of 16-time grand-slam winner Roger Federer after a successful trial period. There was the possibility of a conflict of interest should Federer meet British No.
Lopez advances after Stakhovsky retires (AP)

Feliciano Lopez of Spain advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open after Sergiy Stakhovsky retired in the second set because of a right toe infection. The 23rd-seeded Lopez was leading 6-3, 4-0 on Sunday when Stakhovsky retired. Lopez reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time since 2008 Wimbledon.
